Giotto Un Artista Universale

Giotto is a relatively unfamiliar name to Taiwanese art lovers.

But in the West, his historical status is that of the founder of Renaissance art. Lending his paintings to Taiwan for exhibition is of extraordinary significance to the Taiwanese audience.

Active at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, he was friends with Dante, a time when medieval culture was coming to an end and the humanistic spirit was on the rise. Before him, Western paintings continued the tradition of Byzantine art and were symbols that conveyed religious beliefs. Mosaics are used as the main material, so the images shown in the paintings are rigid and standardized. From today's perspective, they are almost the same and closer to patterns.

The spiritual response of the Renaissance was the true description of nature and characters in art. So that the painting can vividly present the image seen by our eyes. This is the first step towards a humanistic view of art. Today, this seems to be a very simple thing, but for the artists of the 13th century, it was a revolution.

This requires not only new horizons and new concepts, but also mastering new technologies. Giotto was born in this great era of civilizational transition, and with superhuman talents took on the task of inheriting the past and ushering in the future.

The most important work left by Giotto is the comic strip of the story of Jesus in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The walls and vaults of this chapel are covered with his works, and the effect is extremely touching. Not only is his work outstanding, but the sense of space is also shocking. Let us not forget that he is also an architect and was responsible for the design of the Florence Cathedral. Since these murals cannot be moved and are inseparable from the architectural space, dedicated people made them into scale models to provide opportunities for thousands of viewers who are unable to go to Padua to appreciate the original paintings to experience and appreciate them in person. This is a product of the new era’s display concepts.
